Truth is stranger than fiction...

Am I the only one who thinks it bizarre that counterculture hero Dennis Hopper is shilling for a financial services/retirement planning company? It seems a tad bit disconnected, sort of like Dr. Josef Mengele pitching for the Red Cross.

Hey,

I am also a writer living in Lubbock, like for a long time. Saw your blog on virtualubbock.com, where I have written several memoirs, stories, essays. My writing glorifies West Texas and Lubbock. It is great for the psychology to word-paint our flat plain in a loving light. In my novel, Texas Poker Wisdom, which I am plugging now right here, the characters drive out Farm Road 40, past the Acuff Steak House, taking the back road to Crosbyton and the gorgeous road side park, just outside town. As a writer, I drove that road many times seeking truth and beauty. If you are going to hang here in Lubbock, you have to see the beauty others don't.

I love sandstorms. They make me happy. When I taught at Tech, my Yankee co-workers whined and moaned when the wind kicked up. Not me. It made me feel superior to expect the sandstorms and take them in stride. I am doing a book signing at BarnesNoble on April 12th at 2 to 4 p.m. Come by and say hello. You don't have to buy a book. Tell your friends. My web site, www.JohnnyHughes.com has old Lubbock stories and an email contact. If you will marinate spam in jalapeno juice and cinnamon overnight, it still tastes bad.

It would be a stretch for me to call myself a writer although I am a lover of words. For as long as I can remember, I've been moved by their power.

I think we should spend as much time in the internal world as we do the external and Lubbock is the perfect place to make that happen. Time well-spent in the internal world makes our senses acute and enables us to see what others may not. It sharpens our awareness.

This is a good thing as I believe all good art stems from a keen sense of awareness; the ability to see the unseen, hear the unheard, and speak the unspoken.

Johnny, thanks for stopping by and
congrats on your book. I look forward to reading it and will try my best to make it to your signing.
